Ellie Bamber, 20, Actor

Whether in historical comedy horror Pride and Prejudice and Zombies or psychological thriller Nocturnal Animals, chances are you’ve seen Ellie Bamber on the silver screen. The British actress, who started off in theater acting before transitioning to film, is currently working on a new and decidedly less gory project called Taipei, which is based off of the romantic novel of the same name by Tao Lin. “It’s about a modern relationship and how the digital world and substances contribute to its growth,” explains Ellie, who traveled to Brooklyn and Taipei to shoot the film. “I hope it reminds viewers of a time before social media when there wasn’t always a third person in a relationship,” she continues. “I hope it reminds them of traditional romances where a connection is made through spending time together without the need of electronics and other substances. And that it stresses to women that you don’t need to be tied down by a man and can pursue a career on your own terms.”

TOM FORD’S NEWEST DISCOVERY ELLIE BAMBER IS THE NEXT REDHEAD MOVIE STAR
The 19-year-old British actress on her fast ascent and how she maintains that gorgeous color.

Tom Ford’s glossy psychological thriller Nocturnal Animals, in theaters now, features a trifecta of stunning redheads: Amy Adams, Isla Fisher, and, not least, 19-year-old newcomer Ellie Bamber, who plays India Hastings, the daughter of Fisher and Jake Gyllenhaal. Ford’s second film, coming seven years after his Oscar-nominated A Single Man, is a marital thriller set in Hollywood and Texas. Bamber, who grew up an hour south of London, had to master an American Southern drawl. “I watched a lot of ‘Friday Night Lights to get the accent in shape,’” she says in her British lilt.

The sun is streaming through a cluster of burnt-red maple leaves, catching the light in Ellie Bamber’s pale strawberry hair, as she tosses her head back in laughter. It’s an early weekday morning in Central Park, yet a sudden surge of passersby is here, craning their necks through the branches to catch a glimpse of the curiously striking girl—clutching a bit of fall foliage, her fantastic mane set on fire.

Ellie Bamber has a spark about her that just lets you know that she was destined to be in front of the camera. The English actress has been captivating audiences since her early childhood days, with leading roles in theatrical productions including her breakout portrayal of “Young Jenny” in Sir Trevor Nunn’s Aspects of Love. And after setting her sights on Hollywood, the 19-year-old found herself breaking into the film world to play Lydia Bennet in the 2016 book-to-screen adaptation of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. It was a role that placed her alongside the likes of Lily James, Suki Waterhouse, and Douglas Booth. From there, the spunky redhead caught the eye of Tom Ford who cast her in his sophomore directorial endeavor, Nocturnal Animals (in theaters on November 23rd).
